TV has changed very little over the last
four decades. While we have gone from black and white to colour and the
programs have become more sophisticated, the medium is still the same. A tv station
broadcasts its images and our dumb receivers pick them up.
All this is about to change! A number of
large companies and consortiums plan to provide the Australian public with more
choice. There is a suggestion of delivering as many as 500 channels to people’s
homes using an advanced fibre-optic network. The viewer will have the power to
select the material he or she watches, to pause the program, slow it down or
rewind it. Eventually we will be able to choose the camera angles. This will be
part of the information superhighway.
Some of the services the information superhighway will provide are interactive tv, video, shopping, education services, video on demand and video telephone calls. Stay tuned!
